German Language Programme

A Look Inside our German Language Programme

There are no resources or collections to display

We offer German for mother tongue speakers at Nanjing International School – as a German Language and Literature course for Grades 6-10 in the IB Middle Years, and as German Literature course in the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11-12.

For students in our Primary School, we provide small group, 1-hour mother tongue German classes once a week after school.

Programme Philosophy

"Our language curriculum is closely based on the national German curriculum, with instruction from qualified, experienced native German-speaking teachers, employing school books, materials, and tests that are used in Germany nationally."Since our school’s founding in 1992, NIS has had close ties to our German community and the companies that operate in the city – over the years, our programme has grown to help support their needs.

Through an individualised, student-centred approach, we support students in learning their mother tongue to keep a high standard of German in writing, reading, and formal communication.

We strive to encourage the German language development of our mother tongue speakers during their time in China, with the goal of making the transition back into the German public education system as smooth as possible, in grade school or university.

IB Language and Literature

In IB Language and Literature, students develop the ability to communicate through the study of language, themes and texts. In this way, they also develop conceptual understandings of how language works. Communication is evidenced through receptive, productive and interactive skills across a range of contexts and purposes that are appropriate to the level of the course and beyond.

Grades 6 to 10

We offer curricular MYP German language class (4 hours per 8-day cycle). Learn more about our MYP Programme.

Grades 11 to 12

Students can choose Standard Level (4 hours per 8-day cycle) or Higher Level German Literature (6 hours per 8-day cycle). Learn more about our DP Programme.

NIS does not offer a MYP German certificate at the end of Grade 10.
