From Our JEDI Task Force
JEDI is springing into Spring. Last week, following the memorable celebration of International Women's Day, meaningful conversations on the importance of gender equality, conscious media consumption, and checking implicit bias continue to flourish across campus. Thanks to our multilingual speeches, the IWD theme for 2024, #InspireInclusion, is alive at NIS.
Similarly, our teachers and counsellors continue to provide ongoing support and training for the Speak Up Program. This program aims to equip our learners with the tools and knowledge to interrupt microaggressions and bias in our everyday interactions. By fostering a culture of respect and understanding, we can create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all, both here at NIS and in the wider world.
Yet another platform for inclusion that is celebrating its 8th year is TEDxNIS Youth. This year’s theme, Light The Spark, takes place this weekend. This incredible student-led initiative is a stage for inclusion and amplifying voices from across our community. It promises to be a captivating event that will inspire and ignite our collective creativity and passion.
Lastly, we are thrilled to announce that next week, from March 18th to 24th, we will join the Neurodiversity Celebration Week. When it comes to inclusion, neurodiversity refers to a world where neurological differences are recognised and respected as all other human variations. Depending on how our brains are wired, we think, move, process information and communicate in different ways. This week-long event will shine a spotlight on the unique strengths and perspectives of individuals with diverse neurological conditions. Through various activities and discussions, we will foster understanding, acceptance, and appreciation for neurodiversity within our community.

Pool Access Guidelines
To improve our student safety protocols, we are implementing new guidelines around the swimming pool office.
Students (PK-G10) can only visit the office before and after school. All students are advised to stay on the school campus during the day and should not use the glass gates unsupervised. The swimming pool office is located outside of this boundary, so it is only available for a visit before or after school.
When students (PK-G10) have a swimming class, the pool and the pool office can only be entered using the changing rooms. Students can't enter the pool through the aquatics office.
If a student needs to borrow any type of equipment, they first need to go through the changing room, take off their shoes and socks, and come to the office next to the learner pool.
Parents and Grade 11 and 12 students can visit the office during working hours.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Niels Loos
Aquatics Director
NIS Library Information

Parents are welcome to check out up to 10 books in the library from 2-4pm Monday-Friday. All library books can be returned to either the library or to two library carts located to the right of the doors inside the Centre or by the cafeteria.
All PK-5 classes have a library lesson in the classroom once every 8-day cycle, and students also check out books 1-2 times every cycle. Secondary students can check out books before and after school and during break and lunch, as well as when teachers bring classes to the library.
If you have any questions you can contact the library at nislibrary@nanjing-school.com
A Message from Our School Nurse
Flu
Dear Families,
We have come to the time of year to expect cold and flu symptoms. Some of these are unavoidable, but there are several things you can do at home to help prevent illness and keep everyone feeling healthy.
Here are some tips to remember:
- Your family should consider getting flu vaccines.
- Wash hands often! This is still the best defense against illness. Encourage your children to wash, especially before meals, using soap and warm water.
- Encourage your kids to cough into their sleeve or a tissue and to wash their hands if they’ve sneezed or coughed into their hands.
- Get plenty of rest. School age children should get 9-11 hours of sleep each night. Grownups should try to get 8 hours.
- Drink lots of fluids and eat a balanced diet - especially breakfast! We frequently see children with stomachaches and headaches due to hunger. This impacts their learning!
Unfortunately, even with the best care, a virus can still make us sick. Please keep in mind the guidelines below when deciding if your child should come to school. Any child with the following symptoms should stay home:
- A fever 99°F / 37.3 °C (measured under the arm) or higher.
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- A frequent cough
- Any rash accompanied by a fever.
- Ear pain and/or eye drainage
- Sore throat with a fever and/or rash
We ask that child does not return to school until these symptoms have cleared up and he/she has been fever free for 24 hours (without a fever reducer).
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child's illness.
Wishing you good health and safety!

Vidigami: How School Photos are Shared
With more events happening as we approach the end of the year, we've got so many school memories to share! All our amazing photos are for you to view and download in one place: Vidigami.
What can you can do with Vidigami as a parent of an NIS Student?
Vidigami is a safe and secure place to find images of your children and other events that have happened at NIS. As a parent, you have received a welcome email from our system. Through this email, you can create an account. Once you have an account, you can view all the images uploaded to Vidigami.
You can explore Vidigami in two distinct ways.
- Scrolling through the Feed
- This allows you to see recently uploaded images in reverse chronological order.
- You can also like posts and share with other parents at NIS
- Clicking on the Explore Tab
- In the explore area you can filter by year, category, recently updated or alphabetically.
Either way you choose, you will be able to find some great pictures of your children.
After finding that fantastic shot, you can even download it, to keep! Vidigami is a great place for our community to be more connected with what is happening at NIS.
Tips to make your experience better!
Tag your child/ren
Did you know that you can tag your child in Vidigami? Tagging makes it easier for you to find pictures of your child. Also, the more you tag the better the system will get at tagging your child for you.
Install Vidigami on your phone
Vidigami is a Progressive Web App, so you don’t need to go to the App Store to install it. However, installing the PWA to your phone will make accessing the great photos so much easier.
If you are interested in learning more about Vidigami and the great things you can do with it, please visit this fantastic resource.

Telecom Fraud Prevention
Defining Telecom Fraud
The crime of telecom fraud refers to the act of using mobile phones, fixed telephones, Internet, and other communication tools to persuade or force the victims to deposit or transfer money to the designated accounts through fabricating facts, or by other remote and contactless means to steal money or property.
Common Types of Telecom Fraud Targeting Foreign Students
- Pretending to be your teachers, bosses, friends, etc. They may say they are in urgent need of money and try to borrow money from you.
- Pretending to be a customer service staff member of a bank, online store, etc. They will tell you something is wrong with your credit card or bank account and try to get your bank account and PIN/password information.
- Pretending to be police officers, prosecutors, judges, etc. They will tell you that you are involved in a crime and ask you to transfer your deposits to a certain “safe account” provided by them.
- Pretending to be your “Mr./Ms. Right”. They will contact you under the guise of making friends on social media or dating and ask for money in the form of favors, gifts, etc.
- Making you believe you just won the lottery and ask for remittance in tax or service charges.
- Pretending to be online shop owners and posting recruitment information online. They will tell you they are recruiting people to buy things in their shops to post fake positive reviews and entice you to pay with your own money first, but you will spend more and more and get nothing in return.
- Posting false information online to make loans. They will tell you that they can get you a loan with simple procedures and low interest rates and then ask you for remittance in the name of commission or deposit when you get hooked.
- Pretending to be the seller of poor-quality commodities. They will contact you to offer a refund with the excuse that the commodity is of poor quality after obtaining the information of you online transaction and ask you to log into a false website to make transfers in the name of a refund.
Online shopping fraud happens most frequently among foreign students.
How to Prevent Telecom Fraud
- Do not trust strangers
- Do not share your personal information
- Do not transfer money before verification
- When you receive a call from 96110 (Anti-Fraud Special Line), please answer it and listen to the staff’s advice patiently to avoid being cheated.
- It is particularly worth reminding that many fraudsters will add numbers such as “00” in front in order to imitate the correct number. If such a call is received, it can be identified as a fraudulent call.
