‘The best time to start was yesterday, the second best is now’
The World Economic Forum throws up lots of interesting data, ideas and predictions, with 2021 being no different. Why would this be important to me as the Director of NIS? Well, if we continue to do the same as we always did, we are going nowhere, and part of my job is to ponder the future that our students will face.
So here are five themes for the workplace of the future from a successful Indian entrepreneur (C. Vijayakumar).
- Work from anywhere – the concept of ‘going to a place of work’ everyday has already been disrupted and will trend towards work from anywhere, particularly for those working in the digital economy
- Work for all – the idea of taking ‘work to people’ rather than ‘people to work’. This could have a major positive impact for those not living in cities.
- Work at will – major breakthroughs in flexible working hours, and perhaps working for yourself with access to jobs with different companies at the same time.
- Work smarter – huge impact of Artificial Intelligence and robotics taking the manual jobs away from humans. The power of being able to think and create will continue to come to the fore.
- Work for planet – the sustainable green economy will create millions of jobs while placing emphasis on saving our planet. The World Economic Forum ‘Future of Jobs Report 2020’ predicted that 50% of all workers will need reskilling in the next five years.
It would be great if parents chatted to their children this weekend about what has changed in their work lives in the last 5, 10, 15 and 20+ years. The next question to your children would be ‘What are you doing at school that is preparing you for the future?’
I refuse to only see the negatives from this challenging 12 months we have been through. Many needed changes in how we live have been forced upon us, some of them are for the better. Let’s step forward.

“最佳的起点在昨天，其次是现在”
世界经济论坛总是提供很多有意思的数据、想法和预测，2021年也不例外。可为什么这对于NIS校长的我而言也有着重要的意义呢? 那就是，如果学校每天一成不变地按部就班，我们将停滞不前，而我的工作之一就是去思虑我们的学生将面临的未来。
下面是一位成功的印度企业家(C. Vijayakumar)对未来职场概念的五点定义。
一、随处都是工作地点 ——每天“去一个地点工作”的概念已经被颠覆，它将趋向于在任何地点工作，尤其是对于数字经济工作者而言。
二、工作适用于所有人 ——我们要明白是“把工作交给人”而不是“人交给了工作”。这可能对那些生活在城市以外的人产生重大的积极影响。
三、灵活机动地去工作 ——重大突破在于弹性工作时间，你可能从多家不同公司获取工作，同时也在为自己工作。
四、更智能化地工作 ——人工智能和机器人技术将替代大部分的人工手工作业。工作将更多体现于思考和创造的能力。
五、为地球而工作 ——当我们致力于拯救我们的地球时，可持续的绿色经济将创造数以百万计的就业机会。据世界经济论坛(World Economic Forum)的《2020年就业前景报告》(Future of Jobs Report 2020)预计，未来五年内，50%的劳动者需要重新培训上岗。
如果家长们能在这个周末和孩子们聊聊，在过去5年、10年、15年甚至20多年里他们的工作、生活发生了怎样的变化，那就太好了。而你们询问孩子们的下一个问题则是：“你在学校里做了哪些事是在为将来做准备呢?”
我拒绝只看到随着过去一年充满挑战的12个月而来的负面影响，虽然我们的生活方式不得不做出许多必要的调整，但有些确是为着更好地生活。让我们阔步迈进吧。“最佳的起点在昨天，其次是现在”。

‘어제 시작하는 것이 최선, 지금 시작하는 것은 차선’
세계 경제 포럼은 2021년도가 조금도 달라지지 않을 것이라는 흥미로운 데이터와 생각 그리고 예측을 쏟아냅니다. 이 내용이 NIS의 전체 교장인 저에게 왜 중요한 의미를 가질까요? 늘 해왔던 방식만을 고수한다면 우리는 어디로도 갈 수 없으며, 제가 해야 할 일 중에는 NIS 학생들이 직면하게 될 미래에 대한 심사숙고가 포함되어있기 때문일 것입니다.
성공한 인도 기업가 (C. Vijayakumar)가 제시한 미래의 일을 위한 다섯 가지 테마를 소개해드립니다.
- 어느 장소에서나 일하기- 매일 ‘직장으로 통근’하는 개념은 이미 무너졌고 특히 정보 통신 산업이 주도하는 경제에서 일하는 사람들에게 어느 장소에서든 일할 수 있는 것은 트렌드가 될 것입니다.
- 모두를 위한 일 – ‘사람을 일터로 이동시키기’ 대신 ‘일을 사람에게 가지고 오기’의 개념. 이 개념은 도시 지역에 살지 않는 사람들에게 꽤 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있습니다.
- 마음대로 일하기 – 유연한 근무 제도에 큰 돌파구가 될 것이며 동시에 다양한 회사에서 일할 수 있는 가능성도 존재합니다.
- 더 스마트하게 일하기 – 인공 지능과 로봇이 인간이 하던 일을 부분적으로 대체하는 것의 결과. 사고하고 창조할 수 있는 힘은 계속해서 주목을 받게 됩니다.
- 지구를 위해 일하기 – 지구를 보존하는 일에 초점을 맞추면서 지속 가능한 녹색 경제는 수백만의 일자리를 만들어 낼 것입니다. 세계경제포럼의 ‘2020년도 미래 직업 보고서’는 향후 5년 동안 근로자의 50%가 재훈련을 받아야 할 것이라고 내다보았습니다.
주말 동안 시간을 내셔서 자녀와 함께 지난 5년, 10년, 15년 또는 20년 이상의 시간이 흐르는 동안 일의 내용이 어떻게 변화하였는지 대화를 나눠 보시는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다. 이 대화 후 자녀에게 다음과 같은 질문을 던져볼 수 있을 것입니다. ‘미래를 준비하기 위해 너는 학교에서 무엇을 하고 있니?’
저는 도전이 되어온 지난 12개월의 부정적인 결과만을 보는 것을 거부합니다. 저희가 살아가는 방식에 필요한 많은 변화들이 요구되었고 그 가운데 일부는 더 나은 삶을 위한 것입니다. 앞으로 나아갑시다. 기억해주십시오. 만약 변화를 시도한다면 ‘최선의 시간은 어제였고, 차선은 지금 시작하는 것입니다.’
