We are proud to announce that Nanjing International School is now accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Like our previous accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), WASC accreditation is a globally recognized standard of excellence and attests to a school’s high quality and integrity.
“The vast majority of quality schools in the region are WASC accredited,” said Mr. Laurie McLellan, School Director at NIS. “The relationship WASC has with our other accrediting organisations, the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the International Baccalaureate (IB), is the same as NEASC. From a professional development and resource perspective, joining the WASC network makes sense for us.”
WASC is a non-profit, world-renowned accrediting association and one of 6 regional accrediting agencies in the United States which works closely with the Office of Overseas Schools under the US Department of State. WASC supports schools worldwide, especially in California, Hawaii, Guam, Asia, the Pacific Region, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The WASC Accrediting Commission extends its services to over 5,200 schools globally.
With the goal of helping schools meaningfully create the highest quality learning experience they can envision for all students, WASC accreditation fosters excellence in school programmes. WASC’s consistent purpose is to professionally support a school’s vision and to ensure that efficient and relevant systems are in place that predictably result in the fulfilment of those expectations for every child. Just like our school’s previous NEASC accreditation, WASC accreditation further certifies that a high school diploma from NIS is considered the same level and standard as a diploma from any high school in the US. This is crucial for our graduates, as many of them wish to pursue studies at an American university.
“We see value in the external accreditation process not only because of the opportunities that it affords our graduates, but also for the rigorous standards the process provides,” said Mr. Kasson Bratton, Director of Learning at NIS.
WASC accreditation validates the integrity of a school’s programme and transcripts, and assures a community that the school’s goals are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable education programme. Furthermore, WASC accreditation is a certification to the public that the school is a trustworthy institution of learning and well-being that is committed to continuous improvement in these areas for all students.
NIS is fully committed to external accreditation with the most highly regarded US, European, and Asian-based organisations. This requires our school to reflect on practice and to maintain the excellence of our academic programme in line with the highest international standards. WASC partners with the IB and CIS, so when our school evaluates itself and is ultimately vetted, we are not just held to CIS standards, but also WASC standards, which demand a great deal in terms of the integrity of our academic programme.
NIS is the only international school in Nanjing to be accredited by CIS, WASC, and the IB. With our first accreditations by CIS, NEASC, and the IB over 20 years ago, we are proud to be consistently re-accredited by these prestigious organisations.
“Throughout the upcoming academic year, we will conduct a detailed self-study, culminating in a synchronized accreditation visit in 2023 by these organisations,” said Mr. Bratton. “Though NIS has maintained the highest levels of accreditation and authorisation for decades, partnering with CIS, the IB, and now WASC is an exciting next step to further enhance our already vibrant learning community!”
