Look out Below! Secondary Egg Drop
Grade 10 Physics students at Nanjing International School have been studying forces and Newton's Laws. After they completed the basics and gained an understanding, they dove into frictional forces and their effect on the world around them.
In the first part of the Drop activity, student scientists focused on the drag force that an object experiences when it is dropped into a fluid. After they learned the mechanics of how parachutes reduce acceleration and how Newton's Second Law applies to landing force, they decided to try it themselves with their Egg Drop parachutes.
Using the Design Thinking process, the Grade 10s aimed at making their design reusable with multiple eggs during testing. Student scientists also developed testing methods for scientific data collection to further refine their design and learning.
Results varied, with some landings softer than others!
