International Women's Day 2023 Highlights
On Wednesday, NIS celebrated International Women’s Day with a wonderful breakfast open to our entire inclusive community. In addition to JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Taskforce faculty members Kelly Holmes and Trina Ryan, many students shared moving speeches in support of equity for all. It was fantastic to see everyone come together to encourage and support empowerment, allyship, and women's rights in the NIS community and beyond.
“Throughout history, countless courageous women have contributed to culture, society and progress, putting their position and lives at risk to become an inspiration to others and become catalysts and agents for change.”
-Sofia, Grade 11
“At the end of the day, the people that you let into your life such as friends, family and romantic partners should cherish and appreciate YOU, your true self; not the person you’re trying to be.”
-Clara, Grade 10
Sexism exists in classrooms because it is systemic. It is at the heart of the gender gap. This happens when there is a difference between women and men in social, political intellectual, cultural, or economic achievements and attitudes. It happens when women and men do not have the same opportunities.
-Carolina, Grade 10
“I’d like to challenge every single one of you here to support each other. To protect each other. After all, feminism isn't just about promoting women's rights – it's fighting for equity. Fighting for each other.”
-Nicole, Grade 10
International Women’s Day is also an important time for one of our school charities, the Amy Yang Fund, which held its annual fundraising lunch at the Grand James restaurant. Attended by members of both our school and greater Nanjing community, the event was one to remember for its speeches, food, and fun.
Our inclusive learning community is proud to celebrate women on International Women’s Day and every day.
