Wow! Creativity, bravery, and talent from Nanjing International School’s Grade 1 was on display during their student-led performance to parents and staff. The showcase is the culmination of Grade 1’s Unit of Inquiry into “How We Express Ourselves”. As part of this unit, the Grade 1s adapted familiar stories and collaborated in small groups to script, rehearse and polish a performance of that story.
As part of this process, our students devised new characters, changed the setting of many of the stories, incorporated familiar places, and added their own touches so the stories better represented things they say, do, and even eat in their own lives. Our students also designed and constructed props for the performance, drew illustrations, and chose music to match their stories. This process helped our Grade 1s develop an understanding of story structure and how to convey meaning through various art forms. There was a great deal of learning that went into each performance, making an impressive display from our young learners!
Throughout the unit, Grade 1 students also had the opportunity to develop and practice their communication and social skills as they shared ideas, decided on story elements, practiced speaking clearly and loudly and cooperated during rehearsals. Bravo!
