Eureka! Grade 9 NIS Science Fair

Nanjing International School’s Science Fair culminates our Grade 9 students’ integrated Science experience before the focus on specific scientific disciplines begins in Grade 10.

“Besides the fact that they get to explore their own interests, the great thing with the Science Fair is that students really start understanding the scientific method when they set a plan to use it,” said NIS Secondary School Science teacher Mr. Richard Winstanley. “That’s the real difference from science fairs versus class. They do the lab; they follow your instructions – but when you tell them that it’s your turn to do your own investigation and apply those skills and deliberately minimize your feedback and get them to reflect more than before. I think the scientific method starts developing there.”

Like previous years, our students explored a wide range of topics that they showcased during the dynamic exhibition, which was attended by students in Primary and peers in Secondary. Projects ranged from dehydrating food to the effects of music on blood pressure to chemical reactions, electricity generation, guitar string vibration, robotics, and much more.

The Science Fair personifies the concepts of Student Voice and Student Choice, an important element of our NIS Strategy. “There’s a lot of voice and choice here today,” Mr. Winstanley said. “And you know, it’s also good prep because next year they have the Grade 10 MYP Personal Project. This is another long-term project where they practise time management. For voice and choice in these big projects, they’re going to have even more as they go through the later grades.”

Our innovative approach to learning has inspired many of our alumni students and recent graduates to pursue university studies in Science, Engineering, or other STEM fields.
