What do virtual author visits, drawing lessons from illustrators, Mystery Guest Readers in the classroom, a tournament of books, and a book character parade all have in common? They all occurred at NIS when we celebrated Book Week!
It truly was a celebration, with students and teachers dressing up daily based on different books, having guest readers in the classrooms, and, of course, authors and illustrators visiting us virtually. It is so important for students to realize that authors and illustrators are real people who go through many of the same steps and frustrations we do when we write and draw. Being able to connect and speak with authors and illustrators will hopefully both inspire and encourage our students to use their creative skills to achieve personal excellence.
Our distinguished, international group of virtual guest authors and illustrators included Chloe Gong, Grace Lin, Anna Kang, and Christopher Weyant, who spoke about the difficulties of time management, the importance of both reading and writing books about various cultures, and how everyday things can be the spark that begins a book! Who knows – in the future we may all be reading a book written by an NIS alumni student!
