Now known as “TEDxNIS Youth”, TEDx is one of Nanjing International School’s longest-running traditions, with a history stretching back more than a decade. While part of the global TEDx movement, the event has always been uniquely NIS: largely student-led, driven by student voice and choice, and designed to encourage our community to burst the bubble by exploring new perspectives, ideas, and ways of thinking.

This year’s Crest Your Wave concept was entirely student-created. From the new logo design to the stunning stage and event aesthetics, every visual element was the brainchild of our student organising team: Emily (G11), Mina, Mayah, and Ilia (all G10), and Liksing (G9). Their creativity and leadership shaped an event that was both visually striking and deeply meaningful.

“Thank you so much, organisers,” said Emily. “TEDx this year was such an amazing and unforgettable event, and I’m so grateful to have worked with all of you.”

Supported by event organisers from across the school – faculty members Jiawen Luo, Carol Fisher, stellar new team member Haleema Ahmed, and Tríona Ryan – the event featured an outstanding lineup of student and staff speakers, our first-ever PYP speaker, and a memorable performance from the NIS Jazz Band.

“Unbelievable team, the way everyone just pulled together, bashed out ideas, enjoyed the process, and bonded,” said Ahmed.

This year’s talks explored a wide range of thought-provoking topics, including Ethical AI, Pesky Perfectionism, Language Equity, and Imagination Resuscitation. Together, these talks challenged audiences to think critically, reflect deeply, and consider new possibilities for themselves and the world around them.

“Astonishing work from the youth of our community to share ideas and seek ways of expressing them to the NIS community,” said Fisher.

With a full house, plenty of laughter, generous support from sponsors across the Nanjing community, and inspiring ideas shared from the stage, TEDxNIS Youth once again demonstrated the power of student leadership and the importance of creating spaces where young people can share the ideas that matter most to them.
