Research to Reality: Grade 1 Habitat Showcase

Our Grade 1 students recently welcomed their parents and teachers to an inspiring Learning Showcase, proudly sharing the culmination of their learning from the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works, as well as their Information Texts literacy unit.

The showcase transformed our Mezzanine into a gallery of inquiry and discovery, with each student hosting their own exhibition station featuring a carefully researched animal habitat diorama and a published informational book. The event provided Grade 1 students with an authentic opportunity to share their learning journey and demonstrate the knowledge and skills they developed throughout the unit.

The project began with students selecting an animal of personal interest and conducting research using books from the NIS digital library. Guided by key criteria including food, water, shelter, protection, and interesting facts, students investigated how animals survive and thrive in their environments. Earlier in the unit, hands-on experiences outside the classroom helped deepen students' understanding of habitats, adaptation, and the interconnectedness of living things. These experiences sparked curiosity and inspired many of the questions that guided their research.

Students then applied their learning by creating detailed habitat dioramas. Using a variety of materials, they painted backgrounds, constructed landscape features, and carefully labelled habitat elements to demonstrate their understanding of how animals meet their needs within specific environments. The process encouraged creative thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail as students worked to make their habitats both realistic and informative.

Alongside their habitat models, Grade 1 developed fully illustrated informational books. Throughout the writing process, they revised and edited their work, strengthened sentence structure and spelling, added captions to support readers' understanding, and refined their texts for publication. These books showcased not only students' growing knowledge of their chosen animals but also their development as young researchers, writers, and communicators.

As parents visited each station, students confidently shared their research, explained the features of their habitats, and read sections of their informational texts aloud, allowing them to practice important speaking and presentation skills while taking ownership of their work.

Grade 1’s habitats and informational books were a wonderful reminder that even our youngest learners are capable researchers, thoughtful communicators, and passionate inquirers!
