NISMUN V: Student Leaders Step Forward

Global citizenship is more than a concept at NIS — it is lived in action. NISMUN V, our fifth Model United Nations conference, brought together 200 student delegates from 14 schools across China for our most expansive in-person gathering since the pandemic. Guided by the powerful theme “On the Precipice,” this year’s conference challenged students to grapple with humanity’s defining moment, where climate thresholds, geopolitical tensions, and technological revolutions place our world at a fragile crossroads between breakthrough and breakdown.

Following The Hague International Model United Nations procedures, NISMUN V featured committees designed for a range of experience levels, from Beginner to Advanced. Delegates debated urgent global issues, including the regulation of hypersonic weapons, cyber warfare and military AI, debt-for-nature swaps, Arctic sovereignty, nuclear escalation risks, digital privacy, indigenous rights, biotechnology, quantum computing, and climate justice. Across the conference, students demonstrated remarkable diplomacy, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving – transforming high-stakes global dilemmas into thoughtful resolutions grounded in cooperation and foresight.

True to the spirit of NISMUN, the conference was largely student-led. Our own Secondary learners served as Secretary-General, Deputy Secretaries-General, and Head Administrator, while NIS students chaired many of the committees. In an extraordinary testament to leadership and agency, the event was organised, managed, and executed primarily by our students. Our NIS delegation also earned several Honourable Mentions and one Best Delegate award, reflecting both preparation and principled engagement.

“Both Mr. Farnham and I are incredibly proud of our students,” shared Ms. Shiqi Burton, NISMUN V teacher mentor. “They have poured their hearts and souls into this conference, and their passion has been truly inspiring. A heartfelt congratulations to them for all their hard work.”

As NISMUN V concluded, what remains is more than debate  – it’s a community of young leaders daring to step forward at history’s edge, ready not simply to stand on the precipice, but to build new ground together.
