NIS Welcomes the Year of the Horse

What does an inclusive Lunar New Year celebration look like at Nanjing International School? It looks like creativity in motion, community in action, and students Bursting the Bubble.

From Pre-K to Grade 12, our campus came alive with a vibrant morning of celebration. Primary and Secondary assemblies showcased the extraordinary range of talent within our community — from flowing ribbon and dragon dances to choir and orchestra performances, Beijing Opera, skits, poetry, and even hip hop. Parents, teachers, and peers filled the audience, sharing in a celebration that has become a cherished highlight of the school year.

Beyond the stage, learning continued in hands-on and meaningful ways. Primary students explored cultural workshops where they crafted horse figurines and stamps, and enjoyed festive treats such as tanghulu. In our Hutong learning space, theatre experiences offered a window into ancient storytelling traditions, connecting past and present through performance. Throughout the previous week, our HUB transformed into a festive gallery of Lunar New Year-themed student art and literature — a visible reflection of curiosity, creativity, and cultural understanding.

More than a celebration, the day was an expression of who we are as a school: internationally minded, locally connected, and deeply committed to inclusive learning experiences that honour our host country. Together, we welcomed the Year of the Horse with joy, pride, and a shared sense of community.
