XIAMUN IX has been a wonderful experience for the NIS Model United Nations (MUN) Club. As the student leader of this club, I have witnessed our beginner delegates grow and excel as they make speeches, points of information, and submit amendments. Our club was honoured to witness 3 members achieving the Best Delegate awards and 1 achieving Outstanding. We were truly amazed at how these MUN novices strived as politicians and diplomats.
Serving as the President Chair of the General Assembly 1, I was honoured to work alongside delegates and chairs from 4 different schools across China (XIS, ISB, Malvern Chengdu, and Xi’an Hanova). A personal highlight is when the General Assembly 1 was merged with the International Court of Justice on the last day of the conference. Delegates were only given 10 minutes of research time on an entirely new topic related to the restoration of culturally significant objects/artefacts. This combined committee witnessed hyper-debates between the United Kingdom and other member nations.
The XIAMUN trip was an awesome experience. We spent a wonderful time on Gulangyu Island, learning about mangroves, strolling along the beach, and watching the sunset with new friends. Best of all, we got to expand our WeChat friend list by a “modicum” of 14!
About Model United Nations
MUN is a student-led educational simulation where our award-winning NIS school strategy of Student Voice and Student Choice and Burst the Bubble really shines. Secondary students learn about international relations, hone their diplomacy skills, collaborate, debate with peers from different schools and backgrounds, and deepen their understanding of the United Nations. Through various committees, participants address global challenges by drafting resolutions and collaboratively devising potential solutions.
