NIS Celebrates ADHD Awareness Month: A Community Effort

October marks ADHD Awareness Month around the world, and here at Nanjing International School students and teachers have been hard at work to share their knowledge and understanding of living and learning with this neurodevelopmental condition. The theme for 2024 is Awareness is Key, and we have embraced this opportunity to learn, understand, and support our neurodivergent community members. Faculty and students have collaborated on a month-long initiative designed to raise awareness and foster an ever-more inclusive learning environment.

A highlight of the month was the "Spicy Bites," a week of lunchtime sessions where students and teachers bravely shared their personal experiences living with ADHD, and our student support teachers shared strategies and tools to break down barriers to learning. These intimate conversations offered valuable insights into the challenges and strengths associated with this condition. The impact was significant; these sessions normalized the experience and promoted greater empathy among staff and students alike.

Our star event, The Student Panel, brought together students with ADHD to share their personal journeys with teachers. This powerful forum provided a firsthand perspective on the daily realities of ADHD, fostering understanding and empathy, and honouring the tenacity and resilience of the panel members.

Following our Secondary students' return from their Discover China trips, homerooms and advisories will host awareness sessions throughout the final week of October. These sessions will reinforce the key messages of the month, encouraging open dialogue and creating opportunities to offer mutual support and understanding within our community.

This month's initiative demonstrates NIS's unwavering commitment to creating a truly inclusive learning community. Diversity is everywhere, by making the invisible visible, we empower each and every learner to thrive.
