In that Moment: Grade 10 Drama Showcase

The Grade 10 Showcase is designed as a project to encourage meaningful and critical thinking about social and global issues. Students choose the issues that interest them most and then explore them through the medium of Drama. This includes activities such as creative brainstorming, discussions, improvisations, scripting, editing, directing, and working on technical elements. Students then perform this to a community audience to give them an authentic performance experience beyond the classroom.

“I am always really impressed with the skill and level of commitment from the students as they work together to create a performance they can be proud of,” said Ms. Annie Philip, Secondary Drama Teacher.

‘In That Moment’ is a play that focuses on the real-life stories of two people whose lives were shaped and changed by one moment. Although their stories are very different, they are both connected by the same theme, that through challenge and adversity can come strength, resilience, and hope.

The first story focused on the story of Malala Yousafzai who was shot by the Taliban on her way back home from school. Malala was treated in England, where she made a full recovery. In 2014, she became the youngest receiver of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The second story was based on the real-life story of the current England football manager, Gareth Southgate. In 1996, he was part of the English national squad and in a crucial match, he missed a penalty which then led to England being knocked out of the Euros 96. As a result, Southgate faced huge backlash and judgments. As a manager, he now tries to change the culture of coaching, making sure that the current team doesn’t have to go through the trauma he did.

“In both stories, it was one moment that helped to shape the future path they took in their life,” said Ms. Philip. “They have both achieved ‘Greatness’ but in very different ways. We are all shaped by moments and events that happen to us, and it is often in the most challenging times, we find our greatest calling.”
