Grade 2 Learning Showcase: Secondhand Sale

Combining inquiry and environmental stewardship, Grade 2 students at NIS deepened their understanding of sustainability through the organisation of a Secondhand Sale. This learning showcase was a practical application of their current Unit of Inquiry, "How We Organise Ourselves," a part of the NIS International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). The unit focused on exploring waste creation and management, as well as the critical relationship between waste and natural resources. By adopting the "See Think Wonder" thinking model, students not only expanded their curiosity but also developed a deeper comprehension of how waste works, culminating in a student-generated definition that underscored the entire learning journey.

The Secondhand Sale project saw Grade 2s collaborating in groups to investigate various aspects of waste management and formulate research questions that guided their inquiry. This participative approach is reflective of the IB PYP’s emphasis on student-led exploration and real-world application, aligning seamlessly with NIS's strategic commitment to fostering independent, critical thinkers who are prepared to contribute positively as global citizens.

Parents and families played a supportive role in the project by donating unused items from their homes for the Secondhand Sale. This not only provided a tangible connection between the students' learning and their immediate environment but also reinforced our school’s spirit of community engagement and responsibility. More than an academic showcase, the Secondhand Sale itself was an altruistic one, with all proceeds donated to the Pfrang Association, our school’s main charity.
