One of our most exciting Discover China trip destinations this year was the ancient capital of Xi’an. Grade 10 explored the city with hands-on, immersive experiences that brought Chinese history and culture to life, transforming Xi’an into a classroom without walls over a thousand kilometers from Nanjing.
A key highlight for Grade 10 was visiting the world-famous Terracotta Army, where students observed thousands of ancient clay warriors and learned about their historical significance. This experience was enriched by a workshop where students crafted their own miniature terracotta warriors, giving them insight into the artistry and engineering behind this incredible archaeological wonder.
Another favourite activity was a noodle-making class, where students tried their hand at preparing traditional noodles, a skill passed down through generations. The activity not only allowed students to engage with Xi’an’s culinary heritage but also connected them with local culture on a personal level – not to mention making a delicious lunch!
Exploring Xi’an’s historic city wall on bicycles added an element of adventure. As students rode along the wall’s ancient pathway, they gained a new appreciation for the city’s blend of ancient and modern.
About Discover China
Launched in 2001, the Discover China program is central to NIS’s commitment to experiential learning. Designed to connect classroom lessons with real-world experiences, it helps students from Grades 4 to 11 develop adaptability, independence, and an international perspective. These trips inspire students to step out of their comfort zones and engage deeply with local cultures and history, building skills they carry forward as global citizens.
Through Discover China, NIS nurtures international-mindedness and fosters personal growth, preparing students for life in an interconnected world.
