German Literacy Night

By Carolina, Grade 12

On Friday, 15th of November, the first German Literacy Night brought together German-speaking students from Grades 1-8 in our new HUB. The younger students (Grade 1-3) were accompanied by their parents. The event started off with an introduction to the Literacy Night and a quiz about the German language that was organised by the Grade 7 and 8 students. The participants were then divided into small, cross-age, and diverse groups to begin their activities, starting with a storybook cinema of The Gruffalo.

Afterwards, the students engaged in different stations, that included rating book recommendations, where the most popular book will be bought, performing Kasperltheater, puppet shows, completing a book quiz, and writing a short story about the HUB. Some of the student’s favourite activities were acting out a puppet show and writing the HUB story, where diverse stories emerged.

The evening also included the typical German dinner “Abendbrot” with bread sponsored by the PTA in the cafeteria, where students had bread, spreads, and vegetables. They were also able to decorate cookies, which were baked by grade 8 students, as a dessert. To end the night, the older students played the interactive game “Die Werwölfe von Düsterwald”, which was amusing and enjoyable for the participants.

The Literacy Night brought together students from different grades and was a great opportunity for the participants to engage in creative activities, bond with one another and find new interesting books. It was a special experience to be alone at night in the school.
