DP Visual Arts & Film Exhibition 2025

This year’s Grade 12 Art and Film Exhibition at Nanjing International School was a powerful display of student creativity, personal expression, and technical skill. Hosted in our cozy mezzanine space, the NIS community was treated to a creative extravaganza divided into two key areas: a film screening section featuring three curated viewing spaces and gallery walls showcasing mixed media artwork. Each piece, whether on screen or canvas, reflected deep themes of identity, memory, social commentary, and the human experience. Students used their chosen mediums to challenge perspectives, evoke emotions, and explore both personal and global issues.

“I am incredibly proud of our senior artists for their outstanding achievements at the IBDP Visual Arts and Film Exhibition,” said Ms. Sandy Kuan, Secondary Visual Arts Teacher. “Their hard work, creativity, and dedication truly shone through in every piece displayed.”

The Visual Art Exhibition featured a range of materials and styles to represent student experiences. Themes of multicultural identity, nostalgia, and self-construction were at the forefront, with compositions arranged to guide visitors through emotional journeys. Artworks incorporated sculpture, photography, painting, and digital media, experimenting with colour, texture, and interactive elements to engage viewers in dialogue. From exploring childhood memories through layered brushstrokes to critiquing societal structures with fragmented imagery, the exhibition evoked the power of visual storytelling and artistic exploration to delight and provoke our community.

The Film Showcase was equally compelling, from cinematic experiments in film noir, lighting, and French New Wave aesthetics to deeply personal narratives on memory loss, isolation, and dystopian survival. Thought-provoking films explored the contrast between humanity and technology, while others examined themes of self-reflection and transformation. Using advanced storytelling techniques such as symbolic lighting, non-linear narratives, and creative editing, these student filmmakers brought unique visions to life, demonstrating both their artistic voices and technical prowess.

“It was a joy to see the unique perspectives and artistic voices they brought to life,” said Ms. Kuan. “Each artwork told a story, and I was deeply moved by the passion and thoughtfulness behind their creations. This exhibition is a testament to their growth as artists, and I feel honoured to have been a part of their journey. Congratulations on this remarkable accomplishment!”
