Discover China: Inspiring International Mindedness
Each year, NIS students from Grade 5 to 11 embark on amazing journeys that transcend the walls of a classroom. Spanning across Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, Discover China is a dedicated extension of our NIS curriculum that is intricately woven into our school's mission and award-winning strategy.
Launched in 2001, the Discover China program seeks to enrich students' understanding and knowledge of China, contributing to a better and more peaceful world. Experiential expeditions like Discover China are fundamental components of a genuinely international and holistic education. They immerse students in a host country's culture, connecting classroom lessons with real-world experiences. These new settings promote personal growth, adaptability, and teamwork. Such engagements cultivate international mindedness by exposing students to diverse cultures, languages, and communities, inspiring them to embrace their role as global citizens.
"Our students are made to step out of their comfort zones, connecting with local arts, history, food, architecture, and people," emphasized Ms. Anna Yuen, NIS Activities Director. "Discover China enhances school-based learning by giving students additional opportunities to form friendships, embrace unfamiliar cultures, and develop collaborative and leadership skills. Through their adventures, Discover China provides a platform for students to nurture a heightened sense of responsibility, perseverance, passion, and creativity as global citizens."
Personal excellence and creative thinking are actively nurtured during the trips, with activities and challenges designed to ignite student creativity. Whether it's problem-solving during an outdoor challenge or engaging in traditional crafts, students are consistently encouraged to think out of the box and approach situations with independence and innovation.
At NIS, we are committed to giving students a voice and choice on every trip. Simultaneously, we strive to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary while bursting the bubble of their comfort zones—enlarging perspectives and enhancing their openness to diverse experiences. Through this approach, we aim to instill in our students the confidence and skills needed to flourish as global citizens.
“These trips change students' perspectives,” said Ms. Yuen. “They gain a deeper understanding, recognising the need for action and collaboration in our ever-changing and interconnected world.
