Discover China: Bursting the Bubble Through Real-World Learning

One core aspect of our award-winning school learning strategy encourages NIS students to “Burst the Bubble” – to step beyond familiar surroundings, embrace challenge, and engage meaningfully with the wider world. Our long-standing Discover China program is a cornerstone of this ethos, bringing it to life through authentic, hands-on experiences across China. It’s also an amazing time for student bonding and growth.

Discover China encompasses students of all ages. For the first time in NIS history, Grade 3 joined Discover China Week, beginning their journey of exploration with a visit to Amazing Grace in Lishui for adventure, teamwork, and discovery. Grade 4 and 5 students followed with outdoor challenges and collaborative activities at Natural Farm and NatureJoy, learning to work together, build resilience, and celebrate each other’s successes. In Shanghai, Grade 6 students faced new adventures in kayaking, rock climbing, and orienteering, while Grade 7 took on archery tag and team challenges in the mountains of Moganshan.

From the scenic peaks of Huangshan with Grade 8 to the teapot traditions of Yixing with Grade 9, and the coastal landscapes of Ningbo explored by Grade 10, every group encountered China in a way that deepened their understanding and curiosity. Senior students ventured further, with Grade 11 hiking and boating in the clear waters of Qiandaohu, and Grade 12 engaging in cultural and academic experiences in historic Yangzhou.

Across all grade levels, Discover China 2025 took learning far beyond classroom walls. Students and teachers alike stepped out of their comfort zones, embraced uncertainty, and discovered the value of courage, care, and collaboration. Every shared challenge and moment of joy, whether hiking through misty hills, cooking a meal together, or exploring ancient streets, strengthened friendships and built lifelong memories.

Our teachers and trip leaders played a vital role in guiding students through each step of the journey, providing encouragement, care, and inspiration. Their dedication ensured that every learner felt seen, supported, and celebrated. We are also deeply grateful to our parents for their trust and partnership. By entrusting their children with the freedom to explore, they helped create space for independence, reflection, and growth.

Discover China is more than a trip – it’s an embodiment of who we are as an inclusive learning community. It connects students to China’s rich culture and landscapes, fosters global citizenship, and cultivates key competencies such as communication, collaboration, ethical thinking, and self-management. Many of our graduates recall Discover China as one of their most transformative NIS experiences: A week that shapes how they see the world and their place within it.
