Biology in the Field

At NIS, learning is most powerful when students can connect theory with the real world through inquiry, collaboration, and exploration. Our Grade 10 and 11 Biology students recently took learning beyond the classroom with a field study exploring how land use and abiotic conditions influence plant growth and biodiversity at a local park.

Working across different areas of the park, students conducted ecological surveys using field equipment to investigate factors such as shade, species diversity, ground cover, and the impact of footfall on plant distribution. Two students with a passion for birdwatching also led visual and audio bird surveys using the Merlin Bird ID app, helping peers identify local bird species in real time.

The experience allowed students to apply their understanding of ecological systems, natural selection, and adaptations in authentic contexts. Grade 11 students will now use the data collected to develop research questions and apply statistical analysis, while Grade 10 students gained valuable hands-on experience in ecological fieldwork and scientific observation.
