Upper School Programme

Upper School at NIS comprises Grades 10 -12. Students in Grade 10 are in their final year of the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The transition from MYP to the Diploma Programme (DP) is made smoother by building early relationships between the Head of Upper School and the students, before they embark in their two years in DP. Parents and students in G10 are coached to make informed decisions about the subjects taken in DP.

The Diploma Programme

The Diploma Programme (DP) is widely regarded as the most rigourous pre-university curriculum and it is accepted by over 2500 universities worldwide, including the leading universities in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States. The DP is an excellent preparation for adult life on university campuses, enabling students to be successful with their university studies and future careers. The programme lasts two years (G11 and G12 at NIS). Students in the DP at NIS benefit from highly experienced international faculty with depth of IB Diploma experience, many of them are IB examiners.

Subjects

The DP emphasizes transdisciplinary learning and requires students to study courses across six disciplines (three of these at Higher Level and three at Standard Level). In addition to the six subjects, the students must also complete the core requirements for the DP which include: Creativity-Action-Service (CAS) programme, the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

CAS raises students’ awareness of community needs and builds confidence in their ability to bring about change. The EE is a 4,000 word essay on a subject of interest. This provides students with the opportunity to develop skills for in-depth independent research, an essential element of university study. TOK is an interdisciplinary course that challenges students to question the basis of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases, and to develop the ability to analyse evidence that is expressed in rational argument.

As an inclusive school it is important that all our academic results are understood within a context. While we are proud that our students consistently achieve beyond the world average at IB Diploma, we are most proud of the fact that we encourage all of our students to follow IB level classes. Many schools are selective and admit their academically most gifted students in order to report better results. We simply want our each of our students to achieve their personal best; for some that means 24 points and for others 45. It is important to view achievement data with a critical eye.
